Yesterday Quarterly No. 02 featuring Bianca Valenti
The second issue of Yesterday Quarterly features big wave surfer Bianca Valenti. In addition to surfing the world’s most dangerous waves, Valenti is a tireless advocate for increasing opportunities and access for all outdoor athletes. Named one of Outside Magazine’s Most Accomplished Athletes in 2018 (alongside climber Alex Honnold and tennis champ Naomi Osaka), her surfing performance and advocacy work has been highlighted in the New York Times Magazine, PBS, BBC World News, ESPN, Surfer Magazine, and the San Francisco Chronicle, among other outlets. Valenti serves as the Big Wave Athlete Representative to the World Surf League, and was inducted into the California Outdoor Hall of Fame in 2023.
In April of 2023, Valenti connected with editor Elizabeth de Cleyre on the phone from her home in San Francisco to discuss how she spends her time in between big wave seasons.
Yesterday Quarterly is a longform interview series, featuring conversations with creatives and entrepreneurs that zero in on a day in their life, capturing the quotidian, the routine, and the unexpected. YQ offers a kind of intimacy of holding someone's day in your hands, and invites us to slow down, read, and reconsider how we span our time.
Print, b&w, 42 pages, 5.5” x 8”
